Submission: Australian Government Inquiry into Adult Literacy

NSLA’s submission in response to the Australian Government Inquiry into Adult Literacy outlines libraries’ vital role in supporting literacy development at every stage through early family literacy programs, adult literacy programs and digital literacy initiatives. The submission strongly endorses the submission made by ALIA and APLA.

Recommendations

That the Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training:

  • acknowledges the role of libraries in lifelong learning and all forms of adult literacy, including health, financial, media and digital literacy
  • acknowledges the connection between early literacy and family literacy

And that government departments in the areas of education, health, social services and Indigenous affairs across all levels of government work with the National Early Language and Literacy Coalition to develop a national strategy for early language and literacy.
