Update from NSLA Executive Officer, Dr Barbara Lemon
CEOs and Directors of NSLA libraries flew north for their July meeting this year, to the warmth of dry-season Darwin.
The meeting was held at the Northern Territory Library on 18-19 July, where we had the pleasure of a tour through the library’s current exhibition, A Territory Story (image above). This meticulously designed exhibition packs an emotional punch and makes ingenious use of a relatively small space. Thanks to collections manager Brian Hubber for showing us through.
Discussion and decisions covered:
- our joint submission to Standards Australia with ALIA and the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee (ALCC)
- results of the NSLA AUSTLANG code-a-thon during NAIDOC week, in collaboration with AIATSIS, which resulted in the enhancement of 8,017 records with at least one Indigenous language code – and a total of 465 languages represented in the Australian National Bibliographic Database
- the next phase of the Culturally Safe Libraries Program, following a pilot of the AIATSIS CORE Cultural Learning online training in all NSLA libraries – this phase involves roll-out of online training, development of Indigenous collections workshops for specialist staff in 2020, and development of online resources based around the ATSILIRN Protocols to be made freely available on our website
- establishment of NSLA Blakforce as a support network for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in NSLA libraries
- potential for national collaboration in the enhancement of web archiving infrastructure
- planning for NED post-launch including further system enhancements
- review of the deed and business model for the NSLA eResources Consortium
- review of the broader NSLA program including a move to defined major projects, advisory groups, and networks, with increased resourcing for internal and external communications.
The November 2019 NSLA meeting will be held at Libraries Tasmania in Hobart.
