Do It Now Update 23-08-10
Progress
At the NSLA meeting held in July, the project group submitted a number of papers.
Public Domain Works in NSLA libraries - This paper outlines the current situation in NSLA Libraries for the access and use of 'public domain' material (or material out of copyright). A number of recommendations are identified, and these recommendations have all been endorsed by the NSLA members. Of great significance, NSLA Libraries have agreed:
- Where NSLA Libraries have digital material that in out of copyright, has not other restrictions and is available online, the libraries will make this material available without charge, without a requirement for a user to contact the library to seek permission to use for any purpose, and at the highest quality practical for the library to provide online.
Deed of Gift Guidelines for Libraries: This paper outlines the purpose of a deed of gift as the clearest and most legally effective way to transfer ownership of donated materials to a library, and provides guidelines for the development of a deed of gift to be used in libraries. NSLA members endorsed the use of Deeds of Gift to be implemented in NSLA libraries.
Staff and Volunteers Copyright Report: This paper outlines current state of play in the NSLA Libraries for current ownership copyright of materials created by institutions. In response to this paper, NSLA members endorses the recommendations in the report.

- The National Library of Australia has integrated the Copyright Algorithm into Libraries Australia. The Copyright Algorithm appears against records in Libraries Australia as a 'Copyright Status' button. A simple click determines whether the item is in or out of copyright using data from the bibliographic record. If this is insufficient information in the record, it returns the message 'Copyright unknown'. Have a go at: http://librariesaustralia.nla.gov.au
- A preliminary audit and review of performance measures for Wireless Services has been undertaken, to identify the most appropriate metrics. More on this soon.
- A thorough audit of copyright communications in NSLA libraries has been completed. Analysis of the content is being used to identify NSLA's needs in the copyright communications area.
