Description and Cataloguing Update 23-08-2010
Progress
- The Lists Project Manager is currently exploring models to make lists searchable via Trove. This involves an investigation of Trove functionality as well as the constraints of Libraries Australia. The work includes trying to identify the common aspects of example lists provided by some NSLA libraries.
- A substantial 2 part survey on Archival Manuscripts Collections has been distributed to nominated representatives in member institutions and completed. Responses are being reviewed. Preliminary analysis indicates that there are significant differences between NSLA institutions. In particular, there are different understandings of terminology.
- A new action to investigate approaches and standards for including geographic identification data in catalogue records was allocated to Group 8 at the NSLA meeting in March. A work package will developed once the way forward is clearer, with SLQ as the lead, with work to be completed by mid 2011.
- Work towards having all Australian and New Zealand Newspapers in print and/or microfilm format catalogued online as a priority is continuing. However, in alignment with the ANPLAN work, the timeframe will be extended to June 2015.
Schedule:
The Project Group is meeting face to face in Canberra, in late August 2010. The agenda for the two day meeting will include discussion upon the results of the project work on Descriptive lists, and the models proposed for converting descriptive lists into Trove. The outcomes of the survey on Improving performance in making archival manuscripts accessible will also be presented and discussed.
