Description and cataloguing
This project will focus on ways of increasing online access to our collections by using more productive, streamlined ways of operating that are appropriate to the different categories of material. The aim will be to identify ways of achieving faster, simpler, and less resource-intensive record creation and to agree on the metadata standards that should apply.
Information on innovative approaches already in place in some libraries will be shared and other ways of achieving productivity gains identified, including collaboration with the publishing sector to reuse data it is producing. Overseas developments will also be assessed, for instance those arising from the Research Libraries Group's (RLG) Renovating Descriptive Practices initiative.
We will concentrate our effort on documentary heritage materials, in particular unique materials which are generally poorly represented in online catalogues. Given the scale of this undertaking, the aim will be to improve knowledge of and access to these collections in as short a timeframe as possible by taking a pragmatic approach, guided by the principle that a brief record is better than no record.
